Voice of Russia: China and Iran are holding the world lead in the number of executions. A report published by the Italian group Hands Off Cain, says about 5,000 executions were carried out in China and more than 400 in Iran in 2009.

A report published by the Italian group Hands Off Cain, says about 5,000 executions were carried out in China and more than 400 in Iran in 2009.

Iraq ranks third with 75 executions, followed by the United States where 52 criminals were executed last year.

The group said its estimates were based on reports by media and other rights groups, as the exact number in China and other states is kept secret.
