Drug smugglers arrested in Iraq include 6 from Iran

Iran Focus: Baghdad, May 30 – Iraqi security forces in the city of Suleimaniya (Iraqi Kurdistan) yesterday arrested a drug ring that included six Iranians and confiscated large amounts of illegal drugs smuggled from Iran and Afghanistan, the Iraqi daily Al-Watan said today. A security official in the city announced that the group, who were also marketing the drugs, had been under police surveillance. Iran Focus

Baghdad, May 30 – Iraqi security forces in the city of Suleimaniya (Iraqi Kurdistan) yesterday arrested a drug ring that included six Iranians and confiscated large amounts of illegal drugs smuggled from Iran and Afghanistan, the Iraqi daily Al-Watan said today.

A security official in the city announced that the group, who were also marketing the drugs, had been under police surveillance.

The official said that in the confiscated goods there were also 200 litres of precursors for explosives.

He added that local security forces had been able to detain a further 19 individuals for marketing drugs in the area, adding that the majority of these people were Iranians. He cautioned similar individuals smuggling drugs from the Iranian border that the law in Iraqi Kurdistan permitted heavy sentences for such crimes including the execution of those convicted.

Separately a police official in Ziqar announced that 10 Iranians had been arrested illegally crossing the border from Iran.
