London, Aug. 12 – The British Foreign Office on Friday criticised Iran for breaching international agreements and resolutions by the United Nations nuclear watchdog Board of Directors by resuming part of its nuclear fuel cycle.

A statement by Foreign Office Minister Ian Pearson, posted on the ministry’s website stated, “Earlier this week, Iran made a serious mistake in resuming part of its nuclear fuel cycle by restarting its uranium conversion facility in clear breach of previous international agreements and IAEA Board resolutions. There is no good reason why it should have done this if its intentions are peaceful and it wants to resolve international concerns”.

The Foreign Office statement pointed to the fact that there was consensus among the International Atomic Energy Agency’s board members on a resolution urging Iran to suspend its nuclear fuel cycle activity.

It said that the international community was clear and united on the issue.

Pearson’s statement urged Iran to reverse its decision and return to the negotiating table with the UK, France and Germany, who it said were “backed fully by the European Union”.

“Iran must restore the confidence of the international community and provide the right guarantees that its nuclear programme is exclusively peaceful. Suspending all uranium conversion activity is an essential part of that process. Only with confidence restored can negotiations continue”, the minister said.

Britain has been singled out within the European Union’s trio by Iran’s hard-line leadership for virulent attacks on her position on Tehran’s suspected nuclear weapons program.
