Tehran, Iran, Sep. 05 – Iran is to make key changes in the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), which include replacements for senior officials in Tehran’s nuclear negotiations team who have been trying to reach a deal with the West regarding the Islamic Republic’s suspected nuclear weapons program.

The newly-appointed secretary general of the SNSC, Ali Larijani, recently announced that the top Iranian decision-making body on all security-related issues was to undergo changes to bring it in line with the current state of international affairs. “Instead of trying to resolve crises [the SNSC must”> in some ways prevent crises from being created”, Larijani said.

It is expected that the post of acting chief of the SNSC would be erased and all its tasks would fall under the responsibility of the body’s acting advisor. Revolutionary Guards brigadier general Qafour Darjazi, former chief representative of the secret police, the Ministry of Intelligence and Security in the state television and radio broadcasting corporation, has been eyed to receive the post of acting advisor of the SNSC. Darjazi, a protégé of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, was once the top military commander in charge of security in Tehran. He is one of the founders of the IRGC and has been involved in the Guards’ terrorist activities outside Iran, according to knowledgeable sources.

Other changes would include the placement of a top diplomat, Javad Vaeedi, as the new head of international security department of the SNSC. Vaidi, who has also been a member of Iran’s powerful State Expediency Council, would take over the tasks of Hossein Moussavian, Iran’s top nuclear negotiator, who would instead act as an advisor to Larijani, who was himself a senior Revolutionary Guards commander.

Another key change would be the replacement of senior nuclear negotiator Sirous Nasseri by Ali-Asghar Soltanieh, Iran’s former permanent representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. Soltanieh is presently an advisor to the Foreign Minister and the top administrative director of the Foreign Ministry’s international-political branch.
