Tehran, Iran, Nov. 20 – Iran’s hard-line Majlis, or Parliament, voted overwhelmingly Sunday evening to end snap inspections of the country’s suspected nuclear sites by international inspectors from the Untied Nations’ atomic watchdog if Tehran’s nuclear dossier was sent before the UN Security Council which could impose trade and economic sanctions. A minor part of the bill will be voted next week.

The bill effectively forces the government to end all “voluntary cooperation” with the International Atomic Energy Agency, including adhering to the Additional Protocol of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which allows spot-inspections of sites suspected of being part of a nuclear weapons program.

The United States and European Union, which suspect Tehran’ nuclear activities are non-peaceful, have threatened to send Iran to the Security Council if it continues to defy an IAEA resolution adopted earlier this year which called in Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment program, the precursor for the development of the atomic bomb.
