London, Jan. 10 – Britain condemned Tuesday Iran’s decision to resume nuclear enrichment-related activities at its massive uranium enrichment plant in Natanz.

Uranium enrichment, a key part of the nuclear fuel cycle, can lead to the development of atomic bombs. The International Atomic Energy Agency had repeatedly called on Tehran to suspend all enrichment-related activities.

Iran formally broke the IAEA seals in Natanz to resume nuclear research and development activities, according to the IAEA.

“We are profoundly concerned that Iran has decided to restart research and development activities related to uranium enrichment. This amounts to yet another breach of IAEA Board resolutions, as well as the Paris Agreement that Iran signed with the UK, France and Germany in November 2004”, said British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw.

“There was no good reason why Iran should have taken this step if its intentions are truly peaceful and it wanted to resolve longstanding international concerns”, Straw added.

The British Foreign Secretary said that he would be in close touch with his French and German counterparts along with European Union foreign affairs chief Javier Solana in the coming days to discuss the EU response.
