Tehran, Iran, Jan. 14 – A prominent Iranian Majlis (Parliament) deputy said on Saturday that Iran had the upper hand in the international standoff over its nuclear activities.

Heshmatollah Felahat-Pisheh told the state-run ISNA news agency that the European Union and the United States were at an impasse as Tehran’s latest nuclear move was “completely legal”.

Iran breached earlier this week an agreement it had signed in November 2004 with the European Union three – France, Germany, and the United Kingdom – in which it had agreed to suspend all uranium enrichment activities.

Iran broke international inspectors’ seals from its uranium enrichment facility in Natanz despite requests from the International Atomic Energy Agency for it to refrain from doing so and commenced nuclear research and development.

Felahat-Pisheh, who is a member of Majlis’ National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, however, said that under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty no country could be prevented from carrying out nuclear research.

“While we witness Iranian activity in this regard, we also see a weakness on the part of the West”, he said. “Even if Iran’s file is sent to the Security Council then, under the law approved in Majlis, it will suspend inspections which it had voluntary accepted and the implementation of the Additional Protocol [of the NPT”>”.

The Additional Protocol gives the IAEA the right to carry out snap inspections of nuclear sites.

He added that such circumstances would be to the loss of the EU and the U.S.
