London, Jun. 26 – A political prisoner was hanged in Tehran after serving 10 years behind bars, Persian-language websites reported on Monday.

The man, identified as Saleh Mahmoudi Gouilani, was hanged in a prison in the north-western city of Orumieh on Saturday, according to the reports.

Gouilani along with two other individuals were accused of killing an agent of the security forces during an armed clash in the nearby town of Sardasht.

Gouilani’s two alleged accomplices were identified as Aziz Kholkani and Masoud Shokeh. The report said that they were both executed several months ago after serving nine years in prison.

In February, the human rights group Amnesty International announced that it had “grave concern” about the “alarming rate” of executions in Iran, in particular highlighting the cases of a number of political prisoners, several of whom are on death row.

Hojjat Zamani, a political prisoner in Iran since 2001, was hanged in Gohardasht Prison on February 7 for being a member of the People’s Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI). The regime applied severe psychological torture on Zamani, 31, to break his morale and compel him to express remorse on television.
