Tehran, Iran, Dec. 22 – Hard-line Iranian cleric Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati called on Arab leaders on Friday to adopt an aggressive posture against the United States in order to gain popularity among their countries’ peoples.

Jannati, who heads Iran’s ultra-conservative Guardians Council, told Friday prayers worshippers in Tehran that Lebanese Hezbollah leader Seyyed Hassan Nasrollah was the most popular figure in the Arab and Islamic world. His remarks were aired on state television.

“He has become popular because of his anti-Americanism. If you want to be popular as well, you too must pursue this policy”, Jannati said in an address to Arab leaders.

“The future of Lebanon is not bleak. We hope that Hezbollah can neutralise the enemies and that the U.S. and Israel come to their senses. We also hope that Arab states understand that today the most despised powers of the world are the U.S. and Israel and that anyone who becomes close to these countries will become despised as well. So, if Arab rulers want to be despised by their own people, they can continue to pursue these countries’ policies”.
