Iran seizes alcohol stash in ambulance

-

AFP: Iranian police have seized more than 3,000 bottles of alcoholic drinks that smugglers were seeking to bring into the country inside an ambulance, the conservative Kayhan newspaper reported on Monday. TEHRAN, Jan 15, 2007 (AFP) – Iranian police have seized more than 3,000 bottles of alcoholic drinks that smugglers were seeking to bring into the country inside an ambulance, the conservative Kayhan newspaper reported on Monday.

“After a road chase between Andimeshk and Korambad (in the west of Iran) the ambulance overturned and police then discovered 3,230 bottles of alcohol,” said local police commander Hamid Machal.

The consumption of alcohol in Iran has been strictly forbidden since the 1979 Islamic revolution, although some Iranians flout the rules and the police regularly announce major alcohol seizures.

Most of the alcohol that comes to Iran comes over its western border from Iraqi Kurdistan.
