Tehran, Oct. 2 – A man was hanged in front of a crowd in one of the main squares in the southwestern city of Ahwaz on Wednesday, the daily Jomhuri Islami reported. The paper identified the executed prisoner as Hamid K.

At least 120 people have been hanged in public in Iran since March, according to the state-owned press. Many more have been executed in prisons nationwide. There are also a substantial number of unreported secret executions in Iran every year.

Iran has one of the highest numbers of executions in the world.
