Tehran, Iran, May 05 – Iran called on the government of neighbouring Iraq to pave the way for a quick withdrawal of United States-led forces from their country.

“The new Iraqi government must plan for as quick a withdrawal of the occupiers as possible”, senior cleric Ahmad Khatami told Friday prayers worshippers in Tehran.

He said the U.S.-led war on Iraq had a lesson to be learnt. “America wanted to create a pillar of democracy in Iraq, but instead it created a pillar of democracy for murder, destruction, and the explosion in the great shrine”, he said, in reference to the bombing of a revered Shiite Shrine in the Iraqi city of Samarra in February.
