Tehran, Iran, Feb. 25 – Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator travelled to Pretoria on Sunday where he met and held talks with South African President Thabo Mbeki, the official Iranian news agency reported.

Ali Larijani, the secretary-general of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, and President Mbeki discussed issues of Tehran-Pretoria bilateral interest.

Earlier in the day, on arriving in South Africa, Larijani announced, “The Islamic Republic of Iran will respond in kind to the actions of countries that are trying to aggravate the issue over Iran’s nuclear program”.

The United Nations Security Council voted unanimously in December to impose sanctions against Tehran for its nuclear defiance. It gave Tehran two months to suspend uranium enrichment and return to the negotiating table.

South Africa will take over the rotating presidency of the Security Council for one month beginning next Friday.
