Tehran, Jan. 02 An Iranian official in charge of combating drugs in Iran stated that there are presently more than four million drug addicts in the country.
Moussalreza Servati, a member of the Iranian Majlis Social Committee, said yesterday, At the start of the revolution we had perhaps 150,000 addicts, but presently we are facing four million addicts.
Irans government is under close scrutiny for the level of narcotics found in Iranian cities. Many experts fear that certain departments and officials within the Iranian regime are overseeing foreign narcotics imports.
Servati said that his seven member committee was currently in the process of reforming itself to wage a more efficient fight against institutions marketing illegal drugs.
The latest statistics show that one out of every seventeen people in Irans 70-million-population uses narcotics regularly.
