Tehran, Jan. 05 – There are more than 600,000 illiterate people in East Azerbaijan province (northwest Iran), according to the head of Literacy Front of East Azerbaijan.

“This figure represents seventeen percent of the province’s population”, Mokhtar Mohammadian said.

“Kolibar and Charoymagh districts with 39 percent have the highest illiteracy rate”, he added.

Mohammadian also said that East Azerbaijan ranked 18th in adult literacy out of Iran’s 30 provinces. The number of illiterate Iranians is estimated to run in the millions.

“Economic and social poverty along with a lack of resources are the reasons behind the increased illiteracy rate in the region”, Mohammadian said.
