JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia, Sept 10, 2007 (AFP) – Saudi King Abdullah met on Monday visiting Iranian Intelligence Minister Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejeie who handed him a message from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the official SPA news agency reported.
It did not reveal the content of the message, but said the meeting in the Red Sea city of Jeddah was attended by Saudi intelligence chief Prince Miqren bin Abdul Aziz.
Iran’s official IRNA news agency said on Sunday that Tehran has urged Saudi Arabia to crack down on religious extremism following reports of anti-Shiite sermons by Saudi Sunni preachers.
It said Iran’s ambassador to Riyadh Mohammad Hosseini asked the speaker of Saudi Arabia’s advisory Shura Council to ensure Iranian pilgrims travelling during the holy month of Ramadan were not the victims of “insults.”
Large numbers of Iranians are expected to make the umrah, or minor pilgrimage, to Mecca and Medina during Ramadan, due to start later this week.
Shiite majority Iran and Sunni majority Saudi Arabia have worked hard in recent years on improving relations.
Ties between the two countries have not always been smooth, most notably when 402 people, mostly Iranians, were killed in July 1987 in clashes between Iranians and Saudi security forces during the annual hajj pilgrimage.
