Kuwait says would not take part in any Iran attack

-

Reuters: Kuwait said on Tuesday it would not allow its territory to be used for any attack on Iran. KUWAIT, Sept 25 (Reuters) – Kuwait said on Tuesday it would not allow its territory to be used for any attack on Iran.

“Iran is a friendly, neighbouring country and it is not possible that we would agree to see it in a difficult position,” Sheikh Jaber al-Hamad al-Sabah, Kuwait’s defence and interior minister, said at a Ramadan meal.

“Kuwait is not a place that harms its neighbours … and would not allow Kuwaiti land to be used to assault any country,” the official KUNA news agency quoted him as saying.

The United States accuses Iran of trying to develop a nuclear weapon under the guise of a civilian atomic programme. The Islamic Republic says it will use its atomic programme to generate electricity. The standoff has provoked concerns that the volatile Gulf region is headed for another war.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is in New York for the U.N. General Assembly, said in a U.S. television interview on Sunday that the Islamic Republic was not heading for war with the United States.

Gulf Arab countries are concerned about the spreading influence of non-Arab Shi’ite Muslim Iran and also fear it is building a nuclear bomb but are loath to see another war on their doorstep after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
