Iran gas not needed or sought for Nabucco-EU

-

Reuters: Iranian gas is neither needed nor sought to make a planned European Union pipeline from Turkey to central Europe viable, a European Commission spokesman said on Tuesday.
BRUSSELS, Nov 27 (Reuters) – Iranian gas is neither needed nor sought to make a planned European Union pipeline from Turkey to central Europe viable, a European Commission spokesman said on Tuesday.

“For the realisation of Nabucco, Iranian gas is neither necessary nor looked for. We have plenty of gas coming from the Caspian region excluding Russia and Iran also,” spokesman Ferran Taradellas Espuny told a news briefing, adding it was up to EU governments to assess any future role for Iran.

Turkey has signed a supply contract with Iran but some EU countries have misgivings because the Iran is subject to U.N. sanctions over its nuclear programme. (reporting by Paul Taylor, editing by Jeff Mason)
