Iran proposes Islamic court for war criminals

AFP: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called on Tuesday for the creation of an Islamic court to try war criminals and other international felons. TEHRAN (AFP) — Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called on Tuesday for the creation of an Islamic court to try war criminals and other international felons.

“An international Islamic court should be formed to prosecute international criminals, those who violate nations’ rights, war criminals and the ones who threaten human life without any fear,” he told a conference in Tehran.

In the speech to the conference of Islamic judiciary heads, Ahmadinejad did not give any further details on who might be tried under such a court or how it would operate.

However Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in September predicted that US President George W. Bush would be tried in an international court for what he called the “atrocities” committed by US troops in Iraq.

Iran’s legal system is based on Islamic sharia law.

In his speech, Ahmadinejad also renewed his attacks on world powers and the UN Security Council, which have been pressuring Iran to halt sensitive nuclear activities.

“Some international institutions, especially the Security Council, are not founded on justice, and the world criminals continue with their crimes with no fear of punishment,” he added.
