An official from the local governorate, who asked not to be named, told AFP that the explosion went off southwest of the city but did not elaborate.
“We have found the location of the explosion. It was in a place southwest of the city. We still do not know the causes,” the official said.
The Fars news agency said the explosion broke window panes and was sufficiently loud to be heard throughout the city, which is the capital of Iran’s East Azarbaijan province.
