Tehran, Iran, Sep. 18 – A powerful earthquake struck the Iranian island of Qeshm on the southern coast on Wednesday, one week after another quake in the same region left at least seven people dead, state media reported.
The quake measuring 5 on the Richter scale struck at approximately 22.13 local time (18.43 GMT), the official news agency IRNA reported, adding that it resulted in electricity being cut off in Qeshm and forced panicking residents to rush in to the streets.
The quake on September 10 measured 6.1 on the Richter scale.
In November 2005, 10 people died and dozens were injured when a 5.9 magnitude-quake jolted Qeshm which is situated in the narrow Strait of Hormuz.
