ImageTEHRAN, April 21 (Reuters) – Iran head coach Mohammad Mayelikohan resigned on Tuesday after just two weeks in charge of the team, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Mayelikohan replaced former Iran striker Ali Daei this month as coach of the three-times Asian champions.

Daei was sacked after regional rivals Saudi Arabia launched a late fightback to beat Iran 2-1 in a World Cup qualifying match on March 28 in Tehran.

The defeat pushed Iran down to fourth place in Group Two.

The top two teams in the group qualify automatically for the tournament in South Africa with the third-placed side going into a playoff.
