ImageTehran, Iran, May 27 – Guards at a prison in Isfahan, central Iran, earlier this week beat and flogged a prisoner to the point that he had to be transferred to hospital, human rights groups say.

The chief of ward 3 of Central Isfahan Prison on 24 May summoned Sayed Mehdi Majidi, 27, under the pretext that his shirt collar was open. After cuffing his hands and feet, blindfolding him, and pouring water on his body, the warden beat and flogged Majidi with a cable, reports said. Karami, a member of the prison’s Intelligence and Security section participated in this action.

The prison officials pushed Majidi into a glass window in the corridor, which lead to severe injuries on the prisoner's head. Majidi then passed out with a concussion. Prison officials transferred Majidi to the Haft-e Tir Hospital in Prison for fear that he might die.

Due to the severity of his injuries and severe eyesight loss, they later transferred him to Alzahra Hospital. There is no information on Majidi’s present state.

Mehdi Majidi had been sentenced to 34 years in prison on charges of complicity in murder and has already served eight years of his term.
