TEHRAN – Iranian Supreme Leader Seyed Ali Khamenei here Wednesday criticized the Greater Middle East plan proposed by the United States, calling on all Muslims to resist it.

Khamenei made the call in a meeting with representatives of central banks of the Islamic states, reported the official IRNA news agency.

“The United States, which has engineered the Greater Middle East plan, seeks to establish a big country named ‘the Middle East’ with Zionist regime at its helm,” Khamenei was quoted as saying.

The United States has proposed a so-called Greater Middle East plan for Islamic countries to promote the westernized democracy and economic reform in the Middle East.

Iran has sharply criticized the plan, terming it as “serving its own interests”.

Khamenei stressed that Muslims should resist “the move aimed at driving the Islamic world from international decision-making scene” and should believe in their potentials and capabilities.

“Efforts to deprive the Islamic world of progress and its influence on the international policy making are an extremely cruel act against Muslims,” Khamenei said.

“Muslims should not yield to the demands of arrogant powers,” Khamenei underlined.

Khamenei also stated that the Islamic world could achieve a determining position in the world through its capabilities and by relying on its own wisdom and unity.
