Kianoush AsaTehran, Jun. 01 – Hundreds of students protested on Tuesday in Tehran’s prestigious Elm-va-Sanaat University (University of Science and Technology) despite an attempt by university authorities and hard-line members of the para-military Bassij force to prevent the action.

Scuffles broke out between several hundred student protestors and Bassij members during the 90 minute demonstration that began at noon.

Students commemorated the life of former chemistry student Kianoush Asa who killed last year in the course of major anti-government protests that rattled the regime.

“My martyred brother, I will take back your right”, chanted the demonstrators who invited other students and lecturers to support their cause.

The students also chanted “Death to mercenaries” during scuffles with the Bassij.

Asa, a 25-year-old post-graduate Chemical Engineering student originally from Kermanshah, western Iran, was arrested in Tehran on 15 June 2009. His family discovered his body bearing signs of torture on 24 June.

Iranian officials fear that the opposition movement is making a concerted effort to bring people to the streets in June to mark the anniversary of the nationwide protests.
