Tehran, Jun. 04 – A Brigadier General, a warrant officer, and two members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) were killed in clashes in the border region of Piranshahr in West Azerbaijan Province, according to the police spokesman in the province.

Brig. Gen. Faramarz Hossein-Zadeh, commander of the border regiment in Piranshar, Warrant Officer Nowrouz Hassanpour, from the same regiment, as well as Ebrahim Mahboubi and Rasoul Razm from the IRGC were killed in clashes when their vehicle was hit by booby trap mines, according to Colonel Ali Jadid, the Public Relations officer of the State Security Force in the province.

His announcement was carried in the semi-official daily Kayhan, which is close to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The report did not provide a date for the incident.

The hanging last month of five activists, four of whom were Kurds, aroused widespread anger in Kurdish areas, leading to anti-government protests and strikes.
