BUSHEHR, Iran, June 28 (UPI) — The Islamic republic should be wary of attempts to push Iran from its path toward real strength, the supreme leader of Iran said.

Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei addressed a delegation in the southern province of Bushehr saying Western powers were moving to manipulate the will of the Iranian people.

He accused the West of deception, blaming world powers for using the “guise of human rights and democracy” as a way to undermine the Muslim state.

“So one should be fully watchful,” the leading cleric warned in statements published on his Web site.

Iran faced an international backlash for its response to the violence that greeted disputed presidential elections in June 2009. More recently, Iran is responding to sanctions at the U.N. Security Council imposed as punishment for a controversial nuclear program.

Khamenei added that the era of super-power dominance is over as Iran has positioned itself as a truly powerful nation.

“The Iranian nation is entitled to real strength and no power can dissuade the nation from its path,” he said.
