TEHRAN, November 26, 2010 (AFP) – A moderate earthquake rocked southern Iran on Friday, state television’s website reported, with no immediate word on any casualties or damage.
The quake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck near the town of Firouzabad in Fars province at about 3:16 pm (1146 GMT), the television report said.
The website of the US Geological Survey put the quake’s magnitude at 5.6, and said it struck 80 kilometres (50 miles) south of Firouzabad, with an epicentre 10 kilometres (six miles) underground.
Iran sits astride several major fault lines in the Earth’s crust and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating.
