Sarkozy says more sanctions on Iran to come

Reuters: French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Friday new sanctions would be taken against Iran, accusing it of taking advantage of the Arab Spring to press ahead with its nuclear programme.

DEAUVILLE, France, May 26 (Reuters) – French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Friday new sanctions would be taken against Iran, accusing it of taking advantage of the Arab Spring to press ahead with its nuclear programme.

Speaking at the closing news conference of a Group of Eight summit in northern France, Sarkozy said the leaders had determined that Iran had used the uprisings in the Arab world to continue what Western countries believe is a programme to develop nuclear weapons — a charge Tehran denies.

“We shall take new measures to reinforce again sanctions against it,” Sarkozy said. (Reporting by John Irish and Nick Vinocur; editing by Alastair Macdonald)
