Report: Iranian tycoon arrested

AP: Iran’s official news agency says tycoon Babak Zanjani has been arrested over corruption charges. The U.S. has blacklisted him for allegedly attempting to evade economic sanctions against Iran.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s official news agency says tycoon Babak Zanjani has been arrested over corruption charges.

IRNA quoted state prosecutor Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejehi. Ejehi didn’t elaborate but the Central Bank of Iran said last week that Zanjani, believed to be a billionaire several times over, has not paid money from oil sales to the bank.

The U.S. has blacklisted him for allegedly attempting to evade economic sanctions against Iran.

IRNA said in its Monday report that Zanjani was taken to Evin prison, north of Tehran.

Calls to his Sorinet Group were not returned.
