Nearly 1,700 pounds of heroin was smuggled into the Netherlands last week hidden in a shipment of Iranian raisins, Dutch police investigators said Monday.
The heroin, valued at about $23 million, was seized by the investigators last Thursday after the raisin shipment had been transported from Rotterdam to Hagestein.
Two men were arrested. Iran is a major transit point for heroin from Afghanistan. Iran also is believed to be the world’s third-largest exporter of raisins, behind Turkey and the United States.
