London, Jul. 25 – Defeated presidential candidate Hojjatoleslam Mehdi Karroubi resigned from his post as Secretary-General of the Militant Clergymen Association and left the clerical group, the state-run news agency ISNA reported today.

Former Vice-president for Legal Affairs, Mohammad-Ali Abtahi, who is also a senior MCA official, said that Karroubi’s departure came despite calls by other MCA members for him to remain in his position, according to ISNA.

Abtahi said that Karroubi had announced his decision at an MCA meeting on Sunday evening and that there would have to be further deliberation to find a replacement candidate.

Karroubi, twice the Speaker of Parliament in Iran, caused a stir during the June presidential elections when he accused radical Islamist Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of winning the race through vote fraud.
