Tehran, Iran, Oct. 20 – Iran’s Foreign Minister raised the stakes in the escalating war of words between his government and Britain on Thursday by claiming that Tehran possessed evidence proving that London was behind last weeks’ twin bombings in the south-western Iranian city of Ahwaz.

Speaking on state television, Manouchehr Mottaki did not elaborate on the documents, but said that London was attempting to sow division among Middle Eastern nations.

“The British with new plans and scenarios are aiming to sow division and meddle in the internal affairs of countries in the Middle East”, he said.

“News and intelligence obtained show that the British are trying to create insecurity in our country”, Mottaki said.

“Documents show that the British are the primary suspects in the recent events in Iran”, the Iranian Foreign Minister announced.

Over the past week, a string of top Iranian officials, including hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, have hinted at a British role in the Ahwaz bombings which left at least six people dead and over 100 injured.

Iran’s state-owned press have called for the Islamic Republic to break off diplomatic ties with London and expel British embassy staff, including Her Majesty’s ambassador Sir Richard Dalton.

On Wednesday, Reuters news agency quoted an unnamed official at a state manufacturing company as saying that Iran’s Ministry of Commerce had imposed a ban on British and South Korean companies.
