Tehran, Iran, Oct. 30 – Iran’s hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Sunday that he stood by his defiant comments earlier this week, which drew worldwide criticism, and said what he said has always been the policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told the state-run television on Saturday that Ahmadinejad’s speech reflected Iran’s “policy and strategy in the past 27 years”.

During a gathering of para-military Islamists in Tehran on Sunday, the ultra-conservative President said, “For 50 years, [the West”> has tried to make people recognise the existence of a usurper country. Today, using the evacuation of Gaza Strip as an excuse, they are trying to convince other nations to break the taboo of recognising this usurper regime (Israel)”.

“I said that the Islamic umma (nation) will confront this effort, and they became angry with what I said and say that the Iranian President has made threats”, he added.

On Wednesday, Ahmadinejad called for the destruction of Israel and threatened Muslim countries that had relations with the Jewish state. “Israel should be wiped off the map. … If any [leader in the Islamic world”> takes a step towards the recognition of this regime (Israel), then he will burn in the fire of the Islamic umma”, he said.

A string of top Iranian officials have defended the president’s remarks against ubiquitous criticism from the international community.

In his speech in front of the Islamist vigilantes who are the mainstay of clerical rule in Iran, Ahmadinejad said, “After the movement of Prophet Mohammad, the Islamic revolution in Iran is the most important event in human history. This revolution has not only affected our lives, it has upset all international equations”.
