Tehran, Iran, Nov. 21 – Several police intelligence officers were arrested on charges of corruption and racketeering, state-owned Persian-language websites reported on Monday.

The mid-ranking officers in the State Security Forces’ counter-intelligence directorate reportedly targeted wealthy company owners and were involved in several high-profile kidnappings.

They were accused of using fake warrants to arrest wealthy individuals on charges of adultery and then releasing them once a hefty bribe had been paid.

Iran’s police force and judiciary are among the most corrupt in the world. Though the word “reshve”, or bribe, is banned from the police vocabulary, the practice is very common and the word has since been replaced by “shirini”, meaning something sweet.
