Tehran, Iran, Jan. 18 – The Commandant of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) warned the country’s press that there would be consequences if articles were written against the Islamic Republic or the elite military force.

Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi said that certain media organisations were attempting to “weaken the Islamic Republic and the [1979″> Islamic Revolution” by hitting out at his elite military force.

In a gathering of military commanders on Tuesday, Safavi pointed to the coverage by the state-run press of a military plane crash earlier this month in which a dozen top IRGC commanders died and claimed that several news organisations had attempted to create “uncertainty”.

“I advise these news organisations to stop such actions”, Safavi said.

“One of the country’s internet sites and a newspaper attempted to create mischief and uncertainty regarding the crash of the Falcon plane. They were attempting to weaken the IRGC”, he added.

“The IRGC will act against anyone who dares to oppose the Islamic Republic and its revolution”, the Revolution Guards chief vowed.

On January 9, a dozen senior commanders of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards died when a Falcon jet belonging to the IRGC crashed in the northwest of the country. The dead included Brigadier General Ahmad Kazemi, commander of the IRGC Ground Forces and a rising star in Iran’s radical Islamist military,

The Revolutionary Guards Corps was founded in the early days of the Islamic revolution in 1979 as an armed force loyal to Iran’s clerical rulers. Its commanders directly report to the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and their mission is to “protect and propagate the Islamic revolution”.
