Tehran, Iran, Jan. 31 – Hard-line Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad congratulated on Monday the radical Palestinian group Hamas in their victory in the Palestinian elections, the state-run Fars news agency reported.

Ahmadinejad told Khalid Mash’al, the chief of Hamas’ political bureau, in a telephone conversation that the group’s victory was due to their “resistance and struggles” against “Zionist occupation”.

“What leads to the victory of the Islamic Ummah is its attention to the injunctions of genuine Islam and lofty Islamic aspirations”, Ahmadinejad said, adding “The enemy fears the power of faith, strength, self-confidence and integrity among Muslim nations”.

He added that Islamic nations had to be vigilant to ensure that “all the occupied lands” in Israel were “liberated”. “The Iranian nation will stand by its Palestinian brothers in this regard”.

“We thank God that struggles, self-sacrifices and martyrdom seeking attempts of the children of the Palestinian nation have today resulted in the first stage of this victory”, he added.

Mash’al told Ahmadinejad during the conversation that he hoped that Qods, or Jerusalem, would soon be free so that they could host their “Iranian brothers” there.
