TEHRAN, Iran (AP) – Iranian lawmakers on Monday approved spending $15 million to investigate alleged American intervention in the country, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

The funds, allocated while the legislature was discussing the annual budget, can also be used to file suit against foreign legal bodies if necessary, the IRNA reported. The bill requires final approval from the constitutional watchdog Guardian Council before becoming law.

State-run television, meanwhile, reported the Foreign Ministry has sent a letter of protest to the United States for planning to spend an extra $75 million to promote democracy in Iran.

Iran said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s request to Congress in February for the money was “provocative and interventionist.”
