Currency: Afghanistan afghani surpasses Iran rial
Tehran – Iran yesterday announced that Afghanistan’s currency, afghani, had overtaken the Iranian rial in its exchange rate value. The Iranian news agency said this was due to American support for Afghanistan’s economy. At present one U.S. dollar is the equivalent of 8,785 rials.

Civil servants go on strike in southern Iranian town
Masjid Soleiman – Civil servants in the town of Masjid Soleiman (southwestern Iran) have for the past four days gone on strike, complaining of insufficient and untimely pay as well of poor working conditions. Residents have reported that garbage was not collected over the last few days.

SSF agent killed in Rafsanjan
Dowlat Abad – One member of Iran’s State Security Forces (SSF) was reported killed after clashes erupted between villagers and authorities, following a dispute over the local village well in Dowlat Abad (Rafsanjan province), Iranian press has reported. Three of the protesters who reportedly numbered more than 200 people were shot at and wounded by SSF agents, and were later taken to jail.

Students facing court sentence
Tehran – Two Tehran students were summoned to court for ‘acting against national security’, according to a lawyer representing them. The two by the names of Alireza Nouri and Hamid Tarkashvand have received a court paper ordering them to appear in court and not to leave the Iranian capital.

Man sentenced to execution for killing mayor
Tehran – A Tehran court sentenced a young man to death, according to the Iranian regime’s Iran Daily. The man was accused of killing the mayor of a small town in the suburbs of Tehran. No other information was given about when and where the sentence would take place.
