TEHRAN, Aug 11, 2006 (AFP) – Six Iranians were killed in a helicopter crash Friday as they tried to resupply a mountaineers’ hut on Iran’s largest peak, the 5,670 metre (18,600 foot) Mount Damavand, state radio reported.

The national Mountaineering Federation aircraft, which was heavily laden with construction materials, came down in the town of Amol in the northern province of Mazandaran at around 6 am (0230 GMT), the head of the provincial disasters office, Behzad Pour Mohammadi, said.

“The helicopter was carrying six people including three flight crew, two Iranian air force personnel and a member of the federation, dispatched to deliver equipment to the third shelter of Mount Damavand,” he said.

The peak, in the Elburz mountains that lie between the capital and the Caspian Sea to its north, is popular with mouutaineers and walkers.
