Iran MPs seek to impeach ‘incompetent’ minister

AFP: A group of Iranian MPs are seeking to impeach Agriculture Minister Mohammad-Reza Eskandari, who has come under fire for alleged incompetence, media reports said Sunday. TEHRAN, Oct 8, 2006 (AFP) – A group of Iranian MPs are seeking to impeach Agriculture Minister Mohammad-Reza Eskandari, who has come under fire for alleged incompetence, media reports said Sunday.

Fifty-one MPs have signed a motion to impeach Eskandari for “failing to implement announced plans, being unaware of the situation in his ministry and incompetence in securing food supplies,” the ISNA news agency quoted lawmaker Dariush Ghanbari as saying.

The motion has yet to be formally declared as “received” by the parliament speaker.

Ghanbari added the deputies were also gathering signatures for the possible impeachment of the Education Minister Mahmoud Farshidi.

In late September, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sacked welfare minister Parviz Kazemi — the first change he made to the cabinet since taking office more than a year ago.

Several ministers only narrowly won a vote of confidence when they were first presented one year ago to MPs, who criticized several of Ahmadinejad’s nominees for lack of qualifications and relevant experience.
