AFP : Thirteen people were killed and 17 injured on Sunday when a bus collided with a truck on a road southwest of Tehran, state television reported. TEHRAN, Nov 26, 2006 (AFP) – Thirteen people were killed and 17 injured on Sunday when a bus collided with a truck on a road southwest of Tehran, state television reported.

The accident happened in early hours of Sunday on the road linking the city of Saveh in Tehran province with western Hamedan province.

“The cause of the accident was the truck veering off its lane to the left side and violating the no passing rule,” local police official Majid Barkhordari said.

Roads around Saveh are the country’s most hazardous because of their narrowness, the report said.

Iranian roads are among the most dangerous in the world with at least 100,000 people, in a country of 69 million, killed in accidents over the past five years.

Police say road accidents are expected to claim 31,000 lives in the current Iranian year, which ends next March 21.
