Tehran, Iran, Mar. 04 – On his return to Tehran on Saturday after talks in Vienna with European foreign ministers, Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator struck a defiant tone, brushing aside threats of Security Council referral.

“Iran has no fear of threats and bullying and the Security Council, when it comes to safeguarding its rights to research and development”, Ali Larijani told reporters upon arrival at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport. His comments were reported by government-run news agencies.

“If they think the sword of the Security Council can be constantly hung [over our heads”>, they’re mistaken”, Larijani said, referring to his European interlocutors in Vienna, who included the foreign ministers of Germany and France, a top British diplomat standing in for a bedridden Jack Straw, and European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana.

“The European Union trio demanded suspension of our research and development program and acceptance of the Russian plan, which we did not accept”, Larijani said.

He said that there had been some agreements in Friday’s talks with the EU trio “but nothing which we could have signed”.

“The EU should know that we are not afraid of their threats of referring us to Security Council as we have done nothing wrong, achieved our nuclear technology by ourselves, and enjoy full popular backing”, he added.

“No government of the Islamic Republic could give up Iran’s nuclear rights”, Larijani said.

On Monday, the representatives of the 35 member states of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency will begin a crucial round of discussions on Tehran’s nuclear file.
