London, May 09 – Iran failed to win a seat Tuesday at the newly-established United Nations Human Rights Council.

The 47-member Geneva-based council replaces the 53-member Commission on Human Rights which ceased operating in March.

The newly-elected members will begin their duties in the council from June 19, 2006 for a period of three years.

Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom were among the Western countries that won seats at the council.

China and Russia also won seats despite their controversial candidacies.
