London, Mar. 25 – The following is the text of a statement by the EU’s foreign policy chief Javier Solana on the adoption of Resolution 1747 by the United Nations Security Council on Saturday:

Brussels, 24 March 2007
S105/07
Javier SOLANA,
EU High Representative for the CFSP,
emphasises the EU’s commitment to a negotiated solution
to the Iranian nuclear dispute

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), commented on the adoption today of the UN Security Council resolution on Iran’s nuclear programme and underlined his readiness for dialogue with Iran aimed at a negotiated solution:

“The international community today sent a very clear signal concerning Iran’s nuclear programme. This third resolution, which was adopted unanimously by the UN Security Council, states clearly that Iran must comply with its international obligations. We continue to be gravely concerned about Iran’s programme. The suspicion surrounding it affects negatively the stability in the Middle East.

Our objective is to change all this. We want to see a successful Iran fully integrated into the international community. In particular, the European Union wants a better, closer relationship with Iran. This is a country of huge potential and we are natural partners. We are committed to seeking a negotiated solution to the nuclear question.

That is why, alongside today’s UNSC Resolution, I have been asked by the countries that have been dealing most closely with Iran to make contact with Dr Ali LARIJANI in order to see whether we can find a route to negotiations. The door to negotiations is open; I hope we can together find a way to go through it.”
