Washington, DC – The U.S. State Department Friday called on Iran to assure the international community its uranium enrichment program would not be used to make weapons.

“They have to answer the concerns of the international community and to date, they have not done that,” deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said.

The comment followed Iran’s rejection of any deal that would require it to abandon its uranium enrichment program, which it says it needs for nuclear energy. The United States says Tehran is clandestinely building a bomb, a charge that is denied in the Islamic republic.

Iran has said it will make an offer Wednesday to Britain, France and Germany in meetings on a way to end the impasse.

Washington has backed the European plan of engaging Iran and has said it will drop its objection to Tehran joining the World Trade Organization and allow the sale of civilian airline spare parts to Iran.
