ImageLONDON (AFP) — The Foreign Office said it had "deep concerns" about Iran's nuclear programme after Tehran Friday unveiled new, faster centrifuges for enriching uranium.

Atomic chief Ali Akbar Salehi said Iran had successfully tested the new centrifuges, capable of enriching uranium six times faster than its existing ones, at a plant in Natanz.

"We have deep concerns about Iran's nuclear programme and its failure to reassure the international community that the programme is purely for peaceful purposes," said a Foreign Office spokesman.

"The use of this kind of technology is of course prohibited by five UNSCRs (United Nations Security Council Resolutions) which require Iran to suspend its enrichment programme and come clean about its nuclear intentions."
