Moscow, Russia – Iran does not need nuclear weapons, Russian President Vladimir Putin said according to a Moscow Times report this weekend.

“Possession of a nuclear bomb will not enhance Iran’s security or regional security,” the Russian president told the First World Congress of News Agencies Friday according to an Interfax news agency report carried by the Moscow Times.

“Iran will not join the nuclear club,” Putin said. “Russia is prepared to reassure the world community that Iran does not have such plans.”

However Putin also called on Iran’s leaders to “meet the International Atomic Energy Authority halfway” in its calls to monitor the Iranian nuclear program.

Russia has been building the Bushehr nuclear reactor in Iran as part of a multi-billion dollar deal.
