VIENNA – The U.S. ambassador to the IAEA said on Monday that a referral of Iran to the U.N. Security Council for breach of international non-proliferation rules was “long overdue”.
“The (IAEA) board has an obligation under its statute to report Iran’s non-compliance to the Security Council,” U.S. ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Gregory Schulte told Reuters on the sidelines of an IAEA board of governors meeting.
“We think a report to the Security Council is long overdue,” Schulte said. He declined to give any details on the timing of any referral of Iran’s case to the U.N.’s highest body.
