OTTAWA – Canada’s foreign minister said Sunday that the International Atomic Energy Agency was two years too late in passing a resolution condemning Iran’s nuclear programme.

Foreign Minister Pierre Pettigrew launched a new warning to the Iranian government not to try to produce enriched uranium, a key step towards making an atomic bomb.

“This action is long overdue and should have been taken two years ago when Iran’s non-compliance was first clearly established by the IAEA,” Pettigrew said in a statement after the UN nuclear watchdog on Saturday adopted a resolution stating Iran was in “non-compliance” with the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Pettigrew said the resolution “justifies the serious concerns that have been expressed by Canada and many other countries about the nature of Iran’s nuclear activities.

“It is noteworthy that the resolution also recognizes that Iran is a special case that requires measures beyond the ones normally used by the IAEA.

“We urge Iran to observe its commitments fully and suspend uranium conversion again,” he said in the statement.
